Ceramic, earthenware or stoneware - what is the difference?

As a lover of Portuguese tableware, you probably already know that each of our unique pieces is carefully crafted by hand. But what exactly does it mean when we talk about ceramics? And what is the difference between earthenware and stoneware? Find out here:

What is ceramics?

Ceramics is a broad term that encompasses a variety of products and materials made from fired clay. The process of making ceramics has been around for centuries, but has evolved over time. Today, ceramics are found not only in the form of tableware, but also in works of art, building cladding, and even space technology.
In any case, ceramics are made from clay that is molded and then fired at high temperatures to create durable and decorative shapes. The properties and quality of the ceramics depend on several factors, including the type of clay, the temperature, the length of firing and the glazes that are applied.

There are two main types of ceramics - earthenware and stoneware.

The difference between earthenware and stoneware

Earthenware: Earthenware is a type of ceramic that is usually porous and rather soft. It is fired at lower temperatures and is therefore more prone to chipping and scratching. Earthenware is often covered with a glossy glaze that makes it look decorative and vibrant. While it is suitable for everyday use, it is not as durable as stoneware in the long term.

Stoneware: In contrast, stoneware is a more robust form of ceramic. It is fired at higher temperatures, resulting in a denser and more durable surface. Stoneware is generally less porous than earthenware and therefore less prone to stains and cracks. It is the preferred choice for tableware that is meant to withstand daily use, as it is simply more durable and also dishwasher safe.
